RUMAH ANAK TEATER will perform at Amnesty International Malaysia 50th Birthday Bash
An Invitation to Amnesty International’s Birthday Bash, “A Toast to Freedom”
It brings us much pleasure to invite you for Amnesty International’s 50th Birthday celebration. Join us for a RIGHTS-fully fun afternoon at the Annexe Gallery, Central Market on Saturday 28 May 2011 from 3.00 pm onwards.
It has been 50 years since the revolution of the pen dawned upon the world. Few would have envisioned that Peter Benenson’s righteous outrage at the unfair imprisonment of two Portuguese students who raised their glasses to freedom would have blossomed into a network of over 2.8 million activists 50 years later. His article which came out in the Observer in 1961 prompted people to remember the “Forgotten Prisoners”. As we celebrate 50 years of activism today, we also renew our commitment to the protection and defence of human rights.
To mark this significant event, Amnesty International Malaysia had embarked on a hunt for 50 Youth Ambassadors. These young and vibrant individuals have now been selected and over the next six months, will journey throughout Malaysia seeking to spread the message of freedom and human rights to fellow youths. The campaign is also carried out in memory of the two Portuguese students who were brave enough to toast to freedom during the dictatorship of António Oliveira Salazar in Portugal. They were later detained and sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. Amnesty International adopted the duo who was eventually released.
We are inviting you to meet the youth ambassadors at the event. The celebrations marks their first day as the faces of Amnesty International Malaysia and for human rights. Be a part of this special moment and support our exuberant ambassadors.
The celebrations are particularly unique as instead of holding to a single theme of a “Rock Concert” or an acoustic set up, we will be meshing together these various genres for the celebrations. We will be featuring the melodic tones of tenor Aaron Teoh from Caipifruta as he takes you through a heart-warming set of mellow tunes. Funk out to indie psychedelic rock band PHLOX! Allow your minds to be provoked by Rumah Anak Teater’s short skit* titled “Berkat Sebuah Kebebasan” and be enthralled by the rhyming musings of Ayam Fared and our first Youth Ambassador Zahiril Adzim.
We hope to be able to share a “Toast to Freedom” with you. For more information please contact Adeline Choo at 03 – 79552680 or email adeline@aimalaysia.org.
*The skit will be performed by Amerul Affendi and Khairil Ridzuan K'N. Zahiril Adzim will make a special appearance in the play. The play was inspired by Amnesty's Toast to Freedom.
