'ORIGINS' Project by Monash - Casting

The team of ‘I AM’, a student short film part of Monash University Sunway Campus’ ORIGINS project is looking for talents for the following roles :

AMIRAH MEI LING MUHAMMAD LEE
A seventeen year old Indian-Malay girl who just completed her SPM. She is adopted by a Chinese Muslim family and now feels the need to find her birth parents. Her persistence and determination leads her to the discovery of her birth father & maternal grandmother who shed light on the harsh truth behind Amirah’s adoption.

MRS MUHAMMAD LEE
Amirah’s adoptive mother. A petite middle aged Chinese housewife. She does all the domestic chores in the house and is very overprotective of Amirah. She is also a sensitive character as she gets rather hurt at Amirah’s request to discover her birth parents. She is also a devout Muslim as she prays with her husband and her daughter and constantly asks Amirah if she’s prayed yet.

MR MUHAMMAD LEE
Amirah’s adoptive father. A middle aged Chinese man who picks Amirah up from school. He is a quiet man who also proves to be patient and gentle in coaxing his wife into helping Amirah find her birth parents. He also trusts Amirah because he believes that this is something she just needs to do. He leads the family during prayers, showing that he is also a devout Muslim like his wife.

 MUTHUSAMY KAPALAN
Amirah’s birth father. A scruffy Indian man in his 30s. Gives out the impression that he is a drunkard as he is constantly with a drink in hand. He adopts a harsh awkward manner towards Amirah and tells her that he never wants her but shows a little compassion when he sees how much finding her birth mother means to her (Amirah).

AMIRAH’S BIRTH GRANDMOTHER
A simple old Malay lady. Gentle in her ways and is very remorseful about her daughter’s decision to give up Amirah. She doesn’t say much but conveys much sympathy through her actions and demeanor towards Amirah.
EXTRAS:
MALAY GIRL 1
Amirah’s schoolmate, also seventeen. Curious about Amirah and asks her friend a lot of questions.

MALAY GIRL 2
Amirah’s schoolmate, also seventeen. Tells her friend things she has heard about Amirah.
MALE MALAY TENANT
Malay bachelor in his 30s. Lives in a newly developed area. Gives Amirah directions.

 OLD CHINESE AUNTY
Simple old lady. Is sweeping her courtyard when Amirah asks her if she (the Chinese aunty) knows her (Amirah’s) father.
